- Is it legal to install an OEM version of software on a computer other than the one on which the software came?
- OEM software is only distributed when sold with specified accompanying hardware. When these programs are copied and/or sold separately from the hardware, it is a violation of the license with the software publisher, and therefore illegal.
- Can I purchase a single licensed copy of a piece of software and load it onto several machines?
- No. This is known as "soft lifting," and is contrary to the terms of a license agreement. This prohibition includes sharing with friends and co-workers and installing software on more than one computer, if not allowed by the license.
- Can I legally copy my friend's software?
- No. Software is protected by federal copyright law, which says that you can't make additional copies of software without the permission of the software publisher.
- Can I legally copy my own software for backup purposes?
- Yes. You can and should make backup copies of the software you legally own. This is your right under section 117 of the Federal Copyright Act.
WGA and OGA only benefit Microsoft!
"What Microsoft needs to do is to really make having a legitimate copy of the software an "advantage".
Here are some suggestions: Deep discounts on software, or how about free support for a full year. None of this "2 support request limit" crap."

These are people with Dells, Compaq's, and HP's and genuine Microsoft products that came bundled with the PCs. It's only MS that see the advantage of having spyware (WGA) planted on their computers. MS should have to pay for our service fees due to this problem, not the client!"
"Copyright enforcement is always done to protect the interests of the copyright holder; not those of licensees, so WGA is always going to be seen as somewhat punitive. Users know it's not being done for their benefit so forget the "protective" stuff; there's no way to make that aspect look like anything but the PR it actually is."

download Windows Genuine Advantage (and possibly other marketingware in the future) makes it
necessary for security-minded individuals to adopt third-party products.
Civilized countries don't allow doctors to sell prescription medicines, because physicians would
be tempted to over bill patients for unneeded medications. Instead, patients receive a written
prescription and go to a pharmacist to buy our pills, knowing that this step reduces any conflict of interest.
In a similar way, it's too much to expect Microsoft to have the power to download software automatically
to hundreds of millions of Windows users - and then never use that power to install revenue-enhancing applications
for itself."
